Howitt, profesor emérito de la Universidad Brown, fue reconocido junto con Philippe Aghion por sus aportes a la teoría de la “destrucción creativa”, la cual explica cómo las innovaciones tecnológicas impulsan el crecimiento económico, pero también desplazan industrias y trabajos existentes, el economista subrayó que los efectos de la IA aún son inciertos y que es fundamental anticipar sus consecuencias.
“Es una tecnología fantástica con un potencial increíble, pero también puede reemplazar mano de obra altamente calificada”, afirmó el investigador de 79 años, agregó que este momento histórico puede compararse con grandes transformaciones tecnológicas como el auge de la electricidad o el nacimiento de las telecomunicaciones.
Howitt recordó que junto a Aghion tardó cinco años en publicar su influyente artículo de 1992 sobre la destrucción creativa, pero aseguró que ambos sabían que habían encontrado una idea decisiva para comprender el impacto de la innovación en la economía moderna.
